Just the beginning
After a game one preview of what looked like was going to be goals galore all series long, the two teams decided that this was not the image they wanted to take into game two. On Monday, we saw a more typical late round playoff game; one that reflects tight defensive systems. In these types of games, goals occur as a result of grit and determination, and they usually aren’t pretty ones. In many cases, an unlikely hero emerges, as it did in game two, with Hawk’s tough guy, Ben Eager popping in the game winning goal. The question now is, what can we expect from these two teams in game three?
Clearly, both teams have displayed that they can match each other offensively and defensively. Although the Hawks are up 2-0 in the series, both teams were relatively even in the stats that matter, and both games were decided by breaks and bounces which favored the Blackhawks. In game one, both teams came out firing on all cylinders, and the scoreboard speaks for itself. No team ever led by more than one, and all goals excluding the last were answered within four minutes. In game two, if it weren’t for the two quick goals by the Hawks in the second period, this game could have just as easily gone to the Flyers.
It will definitely be interesting to see which team both cities decide to bring into game three. Is it going to be a Fight or Flight approach? I guess only time will tell. There might be good reason to still to expect a higher scoring game, as there is still a big question mark with goaltending. Even in game two, it is not convincing that goaltending was the underlying factor that reflected the low scoring affair. A lot of the shots on goal were not difficult saves, and rebound control was not significantly impressive by either goaltender. The goalies, especially Niemi, did their part to stop the pucks that came to them, but because of the excellent display of defense by both teams, they weren’t tested to their limits.

Although the series might suggest otherwise, on paper, the cup is still up for grabs. If there is any team that knows what it is like to be labeled “down and out” in these playoffs, it is the Flyers, and they know they are capable of turning the table. Buckle up, as the series shifts over to Broadstreet. It is only just beginning.
