Oilers’ Khabibulin may do Jail Time for DUI
The DUI case of Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin finally reached a verdict as the 4-time all star was found guilty of driving under the influence.
Khabibulin was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona back in February after being pulled over for surpassing the speed limit by 25 miles an hour. After pulling Khabibulin over, the officer at the scene noticed several signs indicating the Russian goalie was intoxicated. The officer administered a field sobriety test, which Khabibulin failed miserably.
Following the arrest, Nikolai Khabibulin was hit with three charges including DUI, extreme DUI, and excessive speeding. All of the charges combined make it likely that Khabibulin could be doing some jail time.
Fortunately for Khabibulin, the maximum amount of time he stands to serve is 30 days. Even still, it will be boring for the all star goalie since his entertainment options will be limited to working out or playing free games of texas hold em poker.
Being found guilty of DUI is just the latest trouble for Khabibulin since signing a 4-year, $15 million deal with the Oilers. His biggest setback happened on November 19 th when he was sidelined for the rest of the season with a herniated disc. Following the injury to Khabibulin, who was 7-9-2 with a 3.03 goals allowed average this past year, the Oilers’ season went in the tank as they ended up finishing dead last in the NHL.

Assuming Nikolai Khabibulin does have to serve a 30-day jail sentence, it’s unlikely that he’ll be in great shape by the time the Oilers’ 2010-2011 season opens on October 7 th against the Calgary Flames. On the other hand, at least he should be playing again.
