OHL News:John Tavares Could be on the move again

John Tavares of the Oshawa Generals is going to be a very busy young man in the next month or so. Tavares and Junior Team Canada teammate Ryan Ellis of the Windsor Spitfires were named today to the roster for the upcoming CHL-NHL Top Prospect game which will be played in Oshawa, Ontario on January 14, 2009.

The big question that remains is who will Tavares be playing for at that time? There is a better than good chance that Oshawa will trade Tavares to a contending OHL team before the trade deadline. Tavares is certain to be drafted high in this June’s entry draft and the Generals have made it clear that they would entertain offers in an attempt to re-build their team for the future.

Tavares will no doubt command a hefty return if the Generals choose to trade him. Among the teams rumored to be in the Tavares sweepstakes are the London Knights who made a similar trade last season during the World Junior tournament. That trade which sent goaltender Steve Mason to Memorial Cup contender Kitchener Rangers has led to the OHL changing a rule and not allowing teams to trade players participating in the World Juniors while the tournament is taking place. The other thing last December’s trade provided the London Knights with, is plenty of ammunition with which they could swing a deal for a player the stature of John Tavares. In return for Mason, the Rangers sent centre Phil Varone, defenseman Steve Tarasuk and forward Nasem Kadri to the Knights along with second, third and fourth round draft picks in 2011 and a second round pick in 2012. Kadri was the “player to be named later” in the deal.

Another team with a shot at obtaining Tavares is the Windsor Spitfires who are currently ranked number one in CHL rankings. A trade to Windsor would again team up Tavares and Ryan Ellis.

It is for sure that Tavares will making an appearance in the Top Prospects game, but we won’t know until after the World Junior tournament if he is going to be taking part as a member of the host Oshawa Generals or possibly another team such as London, Windsor, Brampton or Belleville.
